Brief Jail Mental Health Screen | Policy Research Associates

description of resource

The Brief Jail Mental Health Screen (BJMHS) is an 8‑item, 2- to 3‑minute screening tool designed to identify people entering jail who may have serious mental health needs. It includes questions about current symptoms, psychiatric history, and prescribed medications, and has been validated for use in criminal justice settings.

who might use it

Correctional officers and intake staff typically administer the BJMHS during booking to flag individuals who may require further mental health evaluation. Agencies, jail administrators, and behavioral health partners may also use it to support early identification and referral processes.

how to use it

During intake, the officer asks each of the eight questions, records “Yes” or “No,” and documents any refusals or relevant comments. It is recommended to refer a detainee for further mental health evaluation if they answer “Yes” to item 7 or 8, to at least two of items 1–6, or if the officer has any additional concerns
